A Late Winter: My Latest Paper Dolls

I finally found a weekend late this winter to make more paper dolls for my Etsy Shop. I can't believe I haven't made any new paper dolls since last October. It has been a busy last few months mostly due to the hustle and bustle of family life and all the holidays that happened along the way.

But I am thankful for that open weekend and getting back to what I love to do! Once I got started on the first paper doll I couldn't stop making them and I still have many more brewing inside my head that I hope to make on my next available weekend!

And here they are my latest paper dolls and their inspirations! Enjoy!

MERMAID PAPER DOLLS

Mermaid Paper Doll #95 was inspired by another underwater beauty, the Giant Green Anemone. I love how stunning sea anemones look with their many layers and mix of colors.

'Abyss' was clearly influenced by the deep ocean known as the abyssal zone. I imagined her  masked in a dark grey camouflage with hints of opaqueness like the creatures that live in this vast depth of watery darkness.

'Vintage Romance' Mermaid Paper Doll was mainly influenced by the rich colors of Art Nouveau. Elegant muted earth tones and delicate jewel-like tones of this mermaid paper doll highlight such colors in the Art Nouveau style.

These next three mermaids (#98 - #100) are tributes to three characters from the outstanding cartoon series "Avatar: The Last Airbender".

Mermaid Paper Doll #98 "Fire" is my interpretation of the character Azula, Princess of the Fire Nation. Azula is the key adversary to the heroes of "Avatar: The Last Airbender". She was a fire bending prodigy, very cunning, narcissistic and crazy as hell!

Mermaid Paper Doll #99 "Water" is my ode to Katara, the waterbending master, of the Southern Water Tribe. She was characterized as spiritual, resourceful, compassionate, and an incredibly fierce and talented waterbender.

Mermaid Paper Doll #100 "Earth" is my tribute to Toph Beifong, earthbending master from the Earth Kingdom. Toph was by far one of the most powerful of earthbenders of her time and she was also the discoverer of metalbending. She is one of my favorite characters from the Avatar series.

Born blind, Toph had a unique style to her earthbending that made her both unpredictable and unconventional. She loved battling and took great pride in her earthbending skills. Toph was characterized as independent, confident, tomboyish,  stubborn and very direct.  Mermaid #100, adorned with green armor like scales with hints of silver metal, is ready for any battle!

Mermaid Paper Doll #101 is based on the talented and gorgeous actress Lupita Nyong'o.  The Miu Miu dress that she wore to the Los Angeles premiere of "12 Years a Slave" was one of my favorites! Even though her dress was a pale pink hue, I opted to show her mermaid version in white. I imagined as a mermaid, she made her dress from aged white whale bones and ocean flora!

Lupita has been my favorite style icon on the Red Carpet this past award season. She just looks smashing in everything she wears and I can tell you this won't be the last Mermaid Paper Doll inspired by her.

MENAGERIE PAPER DOLLS

My newest Menagerie Paper Dolls are dedicated to my Mom and Dad. I used personalized rubber stamps made of my parents faces on their wedding day by the talented Etsy artist Kozue. I originally had them made two years ago for their 50th Wedding Anniversary but didn't get a chance to use them.

I thought since my Dad was a sailor in the Navy it would be fun to show him as a merman. And not just any merman, a hipster one because my Dad to this day has always been pretty fashionably hip even with his handlebar mustache from the 1970s through the 1980s. My Mom was never a fan of sailing on a large Navy Ship (which she has) and felt to me she should be more a land-based creature! Strong, protective, and motherly, my Mom has been the anchor to her large herd of kids and now grandkids at our family homestead.

'Rock' is my Mom's nickname for my Dad and 'Tekla' is my Dad's nickname for my Mom, and of course are the inspiration for my Etsy Shop name. I really enjoyed making these two paper dolls and put in a lot of small details to personalize their looks from the nautical themed t-shirt of my Dad's merman to the bouquet of seaweed and coral and to the deer antlers that adorn my Mom's centaur's headpiece. These two paper dolls are definitely one of my favorites of all time!

I hope you enjoyed my latest paper dolls and I hope to continue making more dolls more often! Also, I signed up for this summer's San Diego Comic Con Art Show again which I am so excited about! Last year's Art Show was so fun and I can't wait to return and make more fantasy and fandom paper dolls for everyone at the Con to see!

Thanks for stopping by!

The Doily Duck's Top 3 Fashion Favorites: 2014 S.A.G. Awards

Just one week after the 2014 Golden Globes, the red carpet is back in the spotlight with the 20th Annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Guild Awards. And quite honestly, compared to last year's SAG Awards, I was very disappointed with the majority of the red carpet fashion.  But alas, I did find my favorite gems amongst the pebbles!

Here are my favorite fashion picks of the 2014 SAG Awards:

LADIES - Top 3

1. Lupita Nyong'o
And here she is again looking absolutely gorgeous! Lupita Nyong'o was my knight in shining armor of the evening! She wore a bright turquoise silk crepe Gucci column gown with a stunning floral embellished neckline. The turquoise color was just amazing and fresh! I loved her subtle hint of blue eyeshadow too!

2. Dame Helen Mirren
In love with Dame Helen Mirren and her Escada dress! At age 68, Helen showed up women half her age and looked totally hot in her long-sleeved gold embellished black dress. Her whole look was beautiful especially the unique beading and embroidery of the dress and her Neil Lane statement earrings.

3. Michelle Dockery
'Downton Abbey' actress Michelle Dockery has yet to disappoint me at the SAG Awards! Michelle wore a bold and striking black & white tuxedo-inspired dress by J. Mendel. She looked amazing with the plunging neckline and the slit up the front of the dress. Plus I loved her matching Gianvito Rossi heels!

GENTLEMEN - Top 3

1. Kit Harington
Actor Kit Harington looks good in just about anything! Oh, and he is wearing a Z Zegna black suit.

2. Jared Leto
I thought Jared Leto looked pretty damn good in his Dior tuxedo. I didn't mind his long 'Tristan-esque' hair and beard and I loved his black polka dot pocket square and Harry Winston watch. But his best accessory of the night was his gorgeous silver maned mother, Constance.

3. Benedict Cumberbatch
And yes, the well-dressed Benedict Cumberbatch. He knows how to wear a classic suit to a tee!

I hope you enjoyed my red carpet fashion favorites for this year's SAG Awards! And I am so looking forward to the mother-of-all-red carpet fashion - the Academy Awards. Moreover, I can't wait to see who will win the 2nd Annual Golden Doily Duck Award for Best Dressed Duck and Drake exclusively for the Academy Awards!

The Doily Duck's Top 3 Fashion Favorites: 2014 Golden Globes

It's that time of the year again when celebrities walk their way down the Red Carpet wearing their finest in fashion. For the first big awards show of the year, I was definitely more impressed by the ladies of this year's Golden Globes red carpet than I was of last year's Golden Globes.  Moreover, I had a very hard time trying to decide my #3 fashion favorite for the ladies that I decided to make it a tie.

So, let me waste no more time, here are my fashion favorites of the night for both ladies and gentlemen for the 2014 Golden Globes.

LADIES - Top 3

1. Lupita Nyong'o
Lupita Nyong'o, nominated for her superb role in '12 Years a Slave', was my absolute favorite of the night. She looked ravishingly stunning in her Ralph Lauren red column off-shoulder gown with a 1960s-inspired cape. Dramatic yet simple, she epitomized such true elegance and beauty.

2. Drew Barrymore
Pregnant and just absolutely radiant, Drew Barrymore shone in her soft, flowing gown with delicate pink, red, and orange floral appliques by Monica Lhullier. I also loved her hint of red lip color and red high heels!

 3. Emma Watson
Emma Watson's Golden Globe outfit was absolutely daring! She wore a striking red Dior Couture chiffon backless gown over black cropped skinny pants. Yes, pants! Emma rocked this look and I thought it felt so avant-garde. In addition, she perfected her look with pink lipstick and purple Roger Vivier heels.

3. Julianna Margulies
Julianna Marguiles stunned in a gown by Andrew Gn Resort 2014. The black and gold brocade gown with coral detailing was "va va gorgeous" complete with a sexy plunging neckline and black and gold chandelier earrings.

GENTLEMEN - Top 3

1.  Chris Pine

Chris Pine in a black Ermenegildo Zegna tuxedo - he wore it well!

 2. Usher
Usher looked smashing in oxblood wool, two-button tuxedo with black dress shirt and black bow tie from the 2013 Fall Calvin Klein Collection.

3. Bryan Cranston
'Breaking Bad' star Bryan Cranston looked great in his Burberry tuxedo! His best accessory wasn't the two Golden Globes he won that night, but his on-trend tie bar! I love tie clips!

I hope you enjoyed my favorite fashion picks for this year's Golden Globes. I am looking forward to next weekend's Screen Actor's Guild Awards and of course the 86th Annual Academy Awards in early March.
